Generative AI can significantly enhance various IT functions by automating complex tasks, improving accuracy, and enabling more personalized and adaptive solutions.

In the rapidly evolving landscape of artificial intelligence, the emergence of Generative AI (GenAI) can potentially revolutionize industries across all sectors.  

The 2024 Sia Partners Global GenAI survey, conducted among 30 Chief Information Officers (CIOs) and IT leaders is exploring the current adoption state, perspectives, challenges, and strategic investments related to GenAI.

Adoption State

The survey revealed a notable trend towards the adoption of Generative AI technologies among enterprises. Over 58% of respondents indicated already implementing GenAI solutions. This surge in interest underscores the growing recognition of AI's transformative potential in enhancing productivity and innovation.

Key Use Cases

Among the identified use cases, several prominent applications emerged: 

  1. Knowledge base management: For 60% of respondents, knowledge base management improvements such as automated content creation or updates, contextual search and summarization or personalized recommendations can enhance productivity in their day-to-day activities 

  1. Software code generation: 59% of respondents identify automated code generation or optimization as the second most profitable use case.  

  1. IT service management: Through automated incident resolution, proactive monitoring and maintenance, and personalized IT support, 42% of respondents acknowledged they will be able to spend more time producing concrete value for their customers. 

  1. Cybersecurity: For 40% of respondents, threat detection and response, and adaptive security policies can make easier their compliance with continuously evolving regulations.  

Obstacles and Challenges

Despite the enthusiasm, significant obstacles limit adoption of GenAI: 

  • Budget and costs: For 31% of respondents, GenAI implies high initial costs, and generates complementary costs such as research and development, operational maintenance, and infrastructure costs 

  • Security and confidentiality: 30% of respondents consider GenAI faces data privacy concerns, as well as ethical considerations and model security issues that have to be tackled within the company 

  • Maturity of technology: For 15% of respondents, GenAI is not mature enough to start investing
